If you want to enjoy the still winter days in Golden Bay, this holiday house catches all the afternoon sun, stores it, and maintains a comfortable temperature.

Little Greenie may appear to be just another modern, professionally finished house with stunning views in a beautiful location. Of course everyone will notice some differences sooner or later, but those interested in environmental technology and smart building will find the differences go right down to the foundations.

Little Greenie is designed with four major principles in mind: Energy efficiency, low maintenance/longevity, ease of construction and value for money. It may be modern, but it’s not about frills or fashion; and while it is unashamedly utilitarian, it’s definitely not drab or boring.

What To Do

  • Nothing

Take a moment… breathe out… and breathe in the quiet.

  • Beautiful Sunsets

Over the water in winter and the mountains in summer. The weather doesn't matter, it'll be just perfect.

  • Outdoor Bath

Every guest loves our outdoor baths - what's not to love? Steaming hot water, magical views and a quiet moment to just be.

  • Swim in the Sea

The clear waters around Wainui Bay are ideal for taking a dip. Or you can simply explore the shoreline.

  • Walk to Taupo Point

A two hour walk along the coastline from Wainui Bay is Taupo Point pa. Evening picnics at Taupo Point are very special. The beach glows under the fading evening light and the kanuka trees turn a rich, bronze colour which contrasts with the emerald colour of the sea.

  • Walk to Wainui Falls

Just five minutes from Golden Bay Hideaway. This is one of Golden Bay's must-do short walks. A stunning native bush track along the Wainui River leads to Wainui Falls, the largest falls in Golden Bay - pack for a picnic and a swim.

  • North Park Walks

Walk the remote northern section of the famous Abel Tasman Coast Track from Totaranui back to Golden Bay Hideaway at Wainui. You'll experience the wild beauty, golden sand beaches and clear waters - without the crowds you might encounter further south. It is a beautiful walk!

  • Kite Surfing

Having consistent north and north-westerly winds in the main season (September to December) and the still turquoise waters in the lagoon makes it a very attractive spot for freestyle. You can have all conditions in one day, as when the tide goes out there are some nice waves on the main outer beach.

  • Kayaking

The Abel Tasman National park is a world renowned sea kayaking destination. Golden Bay Hideaway is a perfectly positioned at the northern end of the national park to explore the many beaches, coves and headlands.

  • Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

There are many days with still waters from December on, and that makes SUPping an awesome experience here. Easily access the many islands and the northern part of the Abel Tasman National Park, exploring its beautiful flora and fauna.

  • Mountain Bike Park

On-site at Golden Bay Hideaway is the best downhill bike park and jumps in the top of the south island. Lovingly crafted by Amani McIntyre. Bring your bike and get professional instruction.

  • Abel Tasman National Park

Abel Tasman National Park is loved for its golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs, and world-famous Abel Tasman Coast Track. With a mild climate and easy access its a good place to visit at any time of the year.

  • Golden Bay

A destination for travellers from around the world, Golden Bay's attraction lies in its remoteness and proximity to internationally significant conservation areas, such as Farewell Spit, Kahurangi National Park and Te Waikoropupu Springs. This plus its relaxed festival atmosphere and friendly culture mean that the population triples during the holiday summer season.

The Little Greenie was again the perfect place to stay for hiking the Abel Tasman NP and having a beer afterwards with one of the great views over the Golden Bay.

We loved little greenie, it exceeded expectations. Amazing job on site selection (so private!), design and construction. The view was spectaular and we loved the tub! A very short drive to the Abel Tasman trailhead at Wainui Bay. At least once in a lifetime you have to treat yourself to Little Greenie.

Gorgeous views of the bay and sunsets out in the tub. Very remote, secluded location, but great access to Abel Tasman. We caught the shuttle to do a day hike, which picked us up just down the driveway from Little Greenie. Enjoyed reading about the sustainability of the house and ended up very pleasantly surprised with the compost toilet! Cooked one night and the house had all the kitchen supplies we needed (made pasta) and ate out the second night at Toto’s pizza (definitely recommend!). Hope to return in the future!

Location location! The little greenie has gorgeous views of the bay and is very close to some very nice trails. The set up is comfortable and we had a very relaxing two day stay. The kitchen is well equipped and it was nice to not have to drive out to find food ( since this is a little bit of a drive from town). Would certainly come back!

If you see this place, book it! It’s so serene and romantic. We wish we could have stayed longer. The tub was perfect for relaxing after long hikes. The compost toilet was really cool and had no odor at all. A really great find and a highlight of our trip to NZ.

Little Greenie was our favorite among the 7 different accommodations my wife and I used during our honeymoon in NZ. Hard to overstate how cool the place really is...from the secluded location on the edge of Abel Tasman, to the breathtaking views of Wanui Bay, to the engineering marvel of the house itself, we loved our stay. The hosts were great communicators, and provided clear instructions both before and upon arrival, with directions and advisories. Prepare for a long drive over Takaka Hill and around Golden Bay, stock up at the Fresh Choice in town, bring a bottle of Methode Traditionelle for the tub, and don't feed the weka!!!

Our stay at Little Greenie was absolutely perfect. It really is just like the pictures, with that stunning view over the bay from the internal space or the outdoor bath, and stylish comfort inside and out. The place is spotlessly clean and the eco aspects of the house are superb - in particular how efficiently it captures and utilises solar energy, and the odor free composting toilet. Our communication with the hosts was easy, efficient and clear - they do provided amazing local tips. We can't wait to stay again! Very very very highly recommended to future guests! Just book it!

Gorgeous view, and really warm and cosy even in cool weather. Outdoor bath was amazing. Local walks were fantastic, particularly Separation Point/Mutton Cove. Stayed three nights and wished we had longer.

This beautiful eco friendly accommodation is more than what we imagined with ever changing views. It was hard getting the hang of not flushing the toilet but loved knowing this house is doing something great for Mother Earth. Star gazing at night in the outdoor bath is a must, however watch out for the odd friendly weka or possum. The location is a perfect gateway to Abel Tasman National Park along with Wainui Falls and many more beautiful sights. We will be back sometime soon.

The Little Greenie is beautiful inside and out, with amazing views and exquisite attention to detail! The outdoor bath tub was very romantic and perfect for our honeymoon. Location is great, as you can walk right out the driveway into trails of Abel Tasman National Park. Can’t wait to come back!

We spent 4 nights at the Little Greenie. It was very special, unique and inspiring for us. Highlights were the reliable warmth, the view out to the bay, the walks nearby and relaxing in the big red couches. Communication with Lawrence was excellent. Everything was as expected - exactly how it is described in the listing. Perfect for a relaxing holiday. Highly recommended!
