Golden Bay Hideaway

Frequently Asked Questions

Which holiday home is right for me?

House Truck, Tiny Greenie and Little Greenie will suit a relationship-nurture holiday retreat - especially where seclusion and peaceful surroundings are priorities.

Kiwi Greenie offers an eco-retreat with total comfort for everyone (sleeps up to four), better suited for children. Tiny Greenie and House Truck sleep four in a small space with the beds on mezzanine platforms.

Hippie House is suitable accommodation for families who wish to find a holiday home to let the days drift by. Sleeps up to four.

How do I know that Golden Bay Hideaway is quality accommodation?

You can take our word for it - seriously, you should trust us - we're not biased at all ;)
You can read customer reviews on our page.

What are the bedding arrangements in the various houses?

All our prices are based on two people sharing a bed. All bed linen and towels are provided. Soaps and detergents are provided.

Kiwi Greenie: Main bed is a super king which can be separated into two singles if previously arranged. The other bed is a queen double in the living area.

Little Greenie: Main bed is a super king which can be separated into two singles if previously arranged.

Tiny Greenie and House Truck: Two private queen size beds, one at each end, access by stairs/ladder. Please note, due to falling hazard please take care with small children, one bed has a safety net.

Hippie House: Main bed is a super king. Second room has two singles.

NB: Extra guests can be accommodated with a mattress on the floor in some cases. Extra guests/mattresses are $30 per night per person.

What is your policy on children and babies?

Our policy regarding wee darlings is:

  • Children sleeping in normal beds: the usual $30 per night applies as extra guests.

  • Under 6 months with own bedding there is no charge.

  • Over 6 months:
Our experience has shown that as soon as kids are crawling our cleaning services increase compared with adults, particularly with the large window areas we have in the houses. They use the same linen and hot water and that is why we apply the fee.

-If you bring your own cot and bedding there will be a one off $30 cleaning fee

-If we supply cot and bedding the normal rate of $30 per night per extra person applies

Will I survive a composting toilet experience?

The Greenies and the House Truck are truly unique places to stay. Part of that experience is the composting toilets.

Many guests find staying with us offers them their first experience with a composting toilet.

This may bring about many questions and sometimes a little concern for the unknown, or a different way to 'normal'.

The composting toilet is very easy to use - simply do what you need to do, followed by a small amount of sawdust - close the lid and you're done!
The beauty of the composting toilet is you can also put all of your food wastes in it to compost down as well. They are a big part of the environmental philosophy at the Hideaway.

Read the feedback left by guests about the composting toilet:

"Very impressed with toilet - I will be putting one in our new house - loved it, can't wait to recommend it!"

"Even changed my mind about composting toilets - it's completely odourless - bravo!"

Can I bring pets?

We have a no dog/cat policy due to past experiences. We border the Abel Tasman National Park and the weka population is just rebounding after being hunted by dogs.
Sorry for this.

What time is check-in and check-out?

You can arrive any time after 2pm. On the day of departure please leave by 10am or as arranged beforehand.

Can we have a late check-out?

Yes you can upon request. $20 late check-out fee and at the discretion of our cleaners. Check out would then be around 12 noon.

Bookings and Policy

What is your accommodation booking and cancellation policy?

In these uncertain times it can be hard to make a plan for the future. We reckon taking a break shouldn't be a stressful experience. So we're making it easy for you to have no worries.

While the NZ Government maintains strict border controls for COVID-19 we are only accepting bookings from guests currently within New Zealand. Stay well - we will update this policy as travel restrictions change.

• In the event of a NZ-wide or Tasman District goverment imposed lockdown we will give a full refund. If the lockdown is in your district we will refund you 50%. We feel this is a fair way to share the risk, otherwise we can be left with many last minute cancellations and vacancies. If you cancel as early as possible we may be able to refill the vacancy with travellers who are not locked down, and in this instance we would refund your payment less $50 admin fee.

In all other cases our standard cancellation policy applies…

• If your cancellation is LESS than 40 days prior to your stay and we CAN fill the vacancy we will refund your payment after deducting a $50 admin fee.

• If we CAN'T fill your vacancy your payment is non-refundable.

• If your cancellation is LONGER than 40 days prior to your stay, we will refund your payment after deducting a $50 admin fee.

How can I book accommodation?

Please look at our availability calendars for all accommodation options - Accommodation Availability

What is the current situation with making bookings during the COVID-19 pandemic?

We are currently only accepting bookings from guests who are within New Zealand.

Getting into New Zealand is not currently a simple process. The New Zealand Government maintains strict border controls for COVID-19. While this is the situation we are only accepting bookings from guests currently residing within New Zealand.

We understand this is can be frustrating when planning for your future excursion to NZ. However, the border situation is uncertain and there remains a high risk that international travellers will not be able to make their stay here and cancellations would be very likely. These cancellations are likely to occur at the last moment.

Golden Bay Hideaway bookings are in high demand and every booked space means someone else is potentially missing out. A booking that is held and eventually gets cancelled at the last moment is a missed opportunity for other guests.

With this situation in mind we've made the difficult decision to only accept bookings from NZ customers. We will update this policy as the situation changes and travel restrictions are reduced.

If you have any questions then please contact us.

Do you do one night stays?

No, unfortunately it is not economic for us to do this. We highly recommend you come for two nights anyway as it's a decent drive to get here and you won't want to leave!

COVID-19 Protection Plan

We're taking the COVID-19 situation very seriously and we're prepared to make everything as safe, easy and affordable as possible for our guests. Golden Bay Hideaway is tackling this challenge with a range of important measures:

Exceptionally Clean

We're very proud of our record on providing an exceptionally clean and safe environment for all our guests. The many glowing reviews in this regard are truly appreciated.

Each home is cleaned on a regular basis and a deep and thorough clean is completed before you arrive for your stay. This involves but is not limited to:

  • Deploying hospital grade cleaning products.
  • Sanitize all 'high touch' surfaces.
  • Dust and clean floors.
  • Clean and shine windows and doors.
  • Refreshing linen and towels and restock supplies.
  • Wash and inspect dishes.
  • Removing of any rubbish.
  • We double-check that everything is clean and safe for your stay.

Golden Bay Hideaway cleaning staff are trained in good hand hygiene and follow recommended cleaning guidelines from the New Zealand Ministry of Health. We encourage our guests to do the same.

Soap, hand sanitisers and disposable (and compostable) hand drying towels are provided for every visitor's safety.

Low-touch Bubble

Each of our accommodations is completely separate from the others. There are no shared facilities. You'll feel like it's just you and the view.

Our "low-touch" approach to the check-in/check-out process means you'll likely never meet any of us face-to-face. When you arrive at Golden Bay Hideaway you can use the intercom at the gate to announce your arrival. From there you simply follow the signs to your accommodation of choice - ready and waiting. And for checkout you can just leave.

We'll never arrive unannounced and burst your bubble. But of course we're always around should you need us - just call or send us a message.

"No worries" Cancellation

Book your bubble break with confidence!

In these uncertain times it can be hard to make a plan for the future. We reckon taking a break shouldn't be a stressful experience. So we're making it easy for you to have no worries with our generous cancellation policy.

While the NZ Government maintains strict border controls for COVID-19 we are only accepting bookings that meet various criteria. Please read all latest information.

Please have a read of our cancellation policy.
